Over the year, Plaża Wilanów (Wilanów Beach) has built a reputation as a spot for an evening walk or a beer with a view of the water. On 24 July it took on a different role for one evening, becoming the starting point of a running campaign with nationwide reach.
According to wilanow.pl, that day Plaża Wilanów (3 Franciszka Klimczaka Street) hosted a free sport and film picnic promoting the "LOTTO na Szóstkę" Run. It started at 19:00, followed by half an hour of running training, then sign ups and attractions, a meeting at 20:45 with Jerzy Górski, world champion in double Ironman and the subject of the film The Best (Najlepszy), and finally, at 21:30, a screening of that film. Admission was free, and for the first 66 people who trained that evening, organisers had free starter packs ready for the September run.
The run itself takes place on 6 September, simultaneously in six cities: Warsaw, Wrocław, Łódź, Kielce, Olsztyn and Szczecin. In total, 6,000 people will take on the six kilometre course, with entry fees going to the Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, for rehabilitation equipment.
Why it wasn't just another poster on a lamppost
It would be easy to dismiss this as one more sponsored event, and Warsaw has no shortage of those in summer. But something about this lineup was different. Jerzy Górski isn't a professional athlete from a PR agency, he's a man who went through addiction and came out of it through sport, to the point that he now travels around Poland talking about it directly, without sugarcoating it. Putting training, his story and a film together in one evening made dramatic sense, not just marketing sense.
A rare chance to turn an evening jog by the water into something more than a jog.
The other point is location. Plaża Wilanów has long deserved events that bring people out after dark, not only for a walk with the dog. A running picnic with an outdoor film screening is exactly the kind of event that builds a place into something more than a spot on the map with a nice view.
For Wilanów residents it was also a practical opportunity. No online sign up, no fees, just showing up. If anyone has been putting off their first running session, it's hard to imagine a gentler start, led by a journalist and coach, not an anonymous instructor with a megaphone.
September's run is a separate decision, but the picnic itself was worth marking in the calendar, if only to see what the first event of this kind on Plaża Wilanów looked like, and whether it becomes a permanent fixture of the district's summer calendar.
