Tomorrow, September 16, Primary School No. 300 named after Wanda Rutkiewicz, at ul. Gubinowska 28/30, hosts the last of twelve meetings in a fitness cycle for Wilanów seniors. Strengthening, general fitness and athletics classes have been running since July 1, always at 1:00 PM, as part of the project "Wilanów Senior. Personal wellbeing and community integration", co financed by the Mazovian Voivodeship self government.
The whole cycle covered twelve meetings: July 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, then August 5, 12, 19 and 26, and finally September 2, 9 and 16. Registration opened on June 17 and ran by phone at +48 22 443 49 08, with places allocated on a first come, first served basis. The sessions focused on improving overall fitness, strengthening the body, developing motor coordination and encouraging regular physical activity past the age of sixty.
The goal: an Olympic start
The organizers never hid the point of the cycle. The classes on Gubinowska street were meant to prepare participants for the 8th Warsaw Seniors Olympics, which opens on September 19 with a ceremony at the "Podskarbińska" Stadium, run by OSiR Praga Południe, and continues through September 26. The rules of this year's edition list thirteen disciplines: athletics, meaning running, shot put and long jump, freestyle and classic swimming, Nordic walking, chess, bridge, archery and air rifle shooting, table tennis and lawn tennis, plus rowing ergometers. Each senior could enter up to three disciplines, and registration for the olympics itself ran from April 27 to June 22, so the start list is already closed.
For Wilanów residents, this is a third, separate thread in this year's senior offer run by the same library and through the same phone number. We previously wrote about the workshops with a physiotherapist at the Main Library on ul. Kolegiacka. The classes on Gubinowska differ from those both in location and in character: not a library room but a school gym and sports field, with a goal that is straightforwardly athletic rather than rehabilitative.
If someone from Wilanów competes in the olympics this year, they will have spent a whole summer preparing right in their own district, a short walk from home. It is a small, local piece of a much larger, citywide event, but exactly the kind that is easiest to miss if you do not happen to live near Gubinowska street.
